Terribly Sad

The news of Heath Ledger’s untimely death makes me feel physically sick and unbearably sad.   Of course one’s first thought must be for his small daughter, who will probably never remember her father.  How awful for his family and friends.

I had just been thinking about him this morning because of the Oscar nominations.  Nothing this year or last year moved me or impressed me even a quarter as much as Heath Ledger’s Ennis Del Mar in Brokeback Mountain.  For all the accolades about Daniel Day-Lewis this year (and his was an excellent performance too, to be sure), I still can’t think of a performance in recent years that was as magnificent as Heath’s Ennis.  He could have been one of the greatest of all time.

You know, I was shocked, then sad, then felt ill, then back to shocked...and now that a few hours have passed, the sadness is really hitting me, and that might sound trite considering I had no personal connection to Heath Ledger, but I feel...bereft. When I think of movie performances that have moved me (as in the, 'I feel like I got punched in the gut' way), the first ones that come to mind are Heath Ledger as Ennis Del Mar, and Mark Ruffalo as Terry in You Can Count on Me. I think of Heath-as-Ennis *a lot* and it's not often that an artist can create something that stays with you so permanently. You and I have talked about Ennis -- and what haunts me is him, in his trailer, with that shirt, and the idea that someone so closed off could have had such a passionate love...it gets me every time I think about it. And that was just the beginning of what Heath Ledger could have done. It's horrible.
