Don't Fail Me Now, NBC

I’m not sure that I’ve blogged yet about how very much I love Friday Night Lights.  Have I?  I can’t remember.  That I like — nay, love — this show is a testament to how great it is, because folks, I hate football.  No, seriously.  I hate it.

I went to Super Football High School and totally believed myself too cool to care about such things.  I went to college football games, but strictly for the tailgating action (occasionally attending only for the tailgate and leaving afterward, occasionally skipping the game entirely to go to the mall, which was socially frowned upon).  The idea of attending, say, the Super Bowl (or really, any live-action football game), makes me feel like I might have an anxiety attack.  Frankly, I do not enjoy sport or athletics of any kind — not playing, not watching, nothing.  I even hate the Olympics because it screws up the Today Show’s usual routine and preempts my regular television programming.  I HATE SPORTS.

Why, then, do I love this show so much?  Well, there are too many reasons to list, but I promise you, the ultimate outcome is that if I could go watch Dillon play in the state championships in Dallas, I would have bid on eBay for the really good seats, and still would have gone if I had to ride there in the way back of Landry’s station wagon behind Matt Saracen’s grandma.  I would have cheered and screamed and cried.  (I did all those things anyway, actually, just in the privacy of my own home.)

It boils down to this:  I may hate sports usually, but I love small southern towns, and I have never seen such an authentic portrayal of a small southern town on television.  In addition, I love that Coach and Tami have the kind of marriage for which all of us strive.  I love that Julie Taylor is a smart, sassy, super-cool only child.  I love that sweet Matt Saracen is believably and endearingly inarticulate.  I love that they eat at Applebee’s (where else are you going to eat in Dillon?  Red Lobster, after church?  Olive Garden, maybe, for the prom?).  I love that Lyla is getting tough.  I love Smash even though he refers to himself in the third person.  I love gorgeous and vulnerable Tyra and her burgeoning friendship with precious Landry.  I love the music (and not just because it’s featured fairly obscure Whiskeytown and Ryan Adams tracks).  I love hot Tim Riggins even though he’s jailbait.  I love watching Jason Street grow up and get tattooed and learn to live in his wheelchair.  I love it all.

I do not love that tonight was the season finale and that it has not been renewed for next season yet.

Please excuse me while I go watch tonight’s episode again.  And if you haven’t watched before now, what are you waiting for?   They’re all free at NBC.com.  You won’t be sorry.

I absolutely LOVE this show! I cannot bear the thought of not seeing these people anymore. I'm kind of glad they didn't leave us with much of a cliffhanger in case it doesn't get renewed. I don't think I could handle wondering the rest of my life if the Panthers won State. I think I would miss sweet little Matt Saracen most of all.

Amen! I love this show more than any show I can remember, maybe even more than I loved My So Called Life when it was first on. I pretty much cry through every episode, in a good way. I nearly hurt myself crying at the end of the Mud Bowl episode. I love the Taylors, love Matt and Julie, love Matt and Landry, love Tim Riggins and little Bo, just love the whole thing.

I read yesterday that NBC has ordered 6 new scripts but not a whole season. Hopefully this is a good sign.

I've never seen it but we are thinking of picking it up. When the previews came out, I figured it was going to be about Odessa Permian, and a mean coach and an abusive program, like the book and movie, so we skipped it. But now everyone raves, so I feel like I should have given it a chance.

My friend Brandi watches it, and I asked her what the big deal was, and she said, "Eh. It's good."

"Just 'good'? Everyone I know who watches it seems to love it."

"Eh. When you grew up in a small Texas football town, you mostly don't need to see it all again on TV, since you've already lived it."

That's my worry - that I can't appreciate it or that it will feel overly familiar or that it will feel Hollywoodized next to my own experience. Does that make sense? I won't enjoy it if I'm picking it apart for authenticity the whole time. (I HATED Varsity Blues, for the same reason. Oh, and the ridiculous writing. Oh, and James Van der Beek couldn't act his way out of a paper bag.)

Either way, since I've already been screwed once by NBC dumping a beloved "wholesome hometown" drama (American Dreams), maybe I'll wait to decide till it's renewed?

i love it, love it, love it. and brian actually watches it with me, which is proof that it must be good. on any other day, he'd rather go to bed at 8pm like a grandpa. we truly live exciting lives. be jealous. :) i loved coach taylor's response when tami told him she was preggers last night. just loved it. made me almost (ALMOST) want have another baby right now, but only if b would recite coach taylor's response. i will be SO sad if it's not picked up for another season.

I read the book, and loved it. I saw the movie, and LOVED it, for different reasons. I watched this show, and fell IN LOVE with it, for different reasons altogether. It is just SO GOOD. And when you say you love shows about small southern towns, what I see is that it reminds me of MY high school, in a regular sized California town with a small public high school and a kick ass football team...which is not southern, at all, but somehow this show makes it so identifiable that I watch it and think YES, we would have had the same exact parade through town, only we went to Carrows instead of Applebees. It's just SO GOOD. I don't give a rat's ass about football, but I love the way sports can make you hold your breath and pray and cry. I love everything about it!!! I truly believe it is the best "family" show I've ever seen on TV and if I had kids, I would enjoy watching it with them. Since I don't, I instead enjoy watching it and imagining the ways in which I could corrupt Matt Saracen.

I totally agree. I want my marriage to be half as good as CT's and Tami's 15 years from now. They are just too perfect. I love this show so much, it kills me that it may not come back next season.

Tracy, even if they just give us this season, I think you wouldn't be disappointed picking up the show now. I thought it was just a perfect set of episodes, with somewhat of a cliffhanger, but also everything came full circle beautifully. If it doesn't come back next season, I at least will not be wondering "But did she choose Jordan or Brian?...Damn, ABC, now I will never know." like with my first tv obsession.
