It's Possible That I Watched Too Much TV Today...

…and during my TV-watching, I took note of a few things.

One thing that upset me: “Blister in the Sun” is now being played in some commercial.  Is it for Burger King?  I’m not sure.  It’s a fast food place, I believe.  Whatever the product is, I’m not buying it.  I feel so old and so offended that Violent Femmes allowed something like this to happen.  Come on, people.  “Blister in the Sun” to sell burgers?  The song is NOT ABOUT BURGERS.  (Another commercial that upsets me, and probably upsets our parents’ generation even more, is the Mamas and the Papas’ “Go Where You Wanna Go” being used to sell incontinence medicine.  As if the fact that three out of four Mamas and Papas are already dead isn’t enough to make a fan feel old.)

One thing that confused me: In this day and age, when we have tiny little cell phones, and tiny little iPods, where we can store literally thousands of songs in something that is smaller than a deck of cards, in this day where we are so technologically advanced, couldn’t the powers that be come up with a less cumbersome microphone system for reality TV stars?  Because it looks pretty awkward on shows like The Hills and Maui Fever when the girls have to wear bulky black microphone thingamajiggers strapped to their back.  It’s really not flattering.  Surely there could be something smaller, something that did not distract the television viewer from the important dialogue occurring on screen, something that did not make all the girls look like Deenie*?

One thing that pleased me:  The current advertisement for MTV’s aforementioned Maui Fever features that RuPaul song “Supermodel (You Better Work!)” and that pretty much made my day, especially when I realized that it was because of one of the girls on the show is named Chaunte.

Bonus — Another thing that pleased me:  Basically, the entire Taylor family dynamic on Friday Night Lights pretty much makes me feel all warm and happy inside, every single week.

*Judy Blume, duh.  Deenie had scoliosis and had to wear a back brace.  Don’t act like y’all didn’t know what I was talking about.

I'm lovin' the Taylors too. After the show last night I actually commented that it's my favorite TV depiction of marriage.

One thing that confuses me is what the eff is even going on on The Hills. I mean, what exactly did Audrina DO? And what is deal with Heidi's "Ohhh snap" line? I'm just catching up, but not being able to follow The Hills' plotlines makes me feel dumber than...well, Anna Nicole, may she rest in peace.

Blister in the Sun IS NOT being used in a commercial.

(One of my most vivid high school memories is of my friend Amy playing this song at the beginning of our AP English class. When it was over, our teacher started her lecture and when she asked people to give examples of use of color in the Great Gatsby, Amy raised her hand and said, "Dr. Wood, do you know what that song is about?.... It is about masturbation." Dr. Wood was surprisingly flustered considering she was also a licensed marriage counselor.)

It's not a Burger King commercial -- it's Wendy's. And it's definitely Blister in the Sun. And it's upsetting, all the way around.

I have also been disturbed by "Blister in the sun" in an insurance ad, or maybe it was a hospital. It was definitely trying to be a family-oriented healthcare type ad. so weird.

Dear god, do all these ad executives need Stoney Amy to come explain what that song is about???
