And the Nominees Are

RYAN GOSLING for Best Actor in Half-Nelson!

I’m sorry, were there others?   I got distracted by thoughts of Ryan Gosling.

I have not seen Letters from Iwo Jima, but I am glad that Dreamgirls did not get nominated for Best Picture because all four of the other nominees (Babel, Little Miss Sunshine, The Queen, and The Departed) were all much better than Dreamgirls.  I think they got the Dreamgirls nominations right — Eddie Murphy and Jennifer Hudson were the best parts of that movie.

I was slightly disappointed that Leo got nominated for Blood Diamond instead of The Departed, but both were excellent performances.

Jake and I just watched Little Miss Sunshine again this weekend so I was pleased that sweet little Abigail Breslin got a nomination.

I was glad that both Cate Blanchett and Judi Dench got nominated for Notes on a Scandal, because watching them together was maybe the best collective acting that I’ve ever seen.  Okay, maybe that’s an exaggeration, but that’s what it felt like.

I feel kind of bad for Emily Blunt, who really was so good in The Devil Wears Prada, only because people had been talking and talking about her so much and you know she might have been getting her hopes up.  I love that both supporting actresses from Babel got nominated, but it doesn’t really matter because Jennifer Hudson is going to win, right?

I’m pretty happy for Mark Wahlberg and Djimon Hounsou in the Supporting Actor category, too.  I do love Mark Wahlberg and he was pretty freaking awesome in The Departed.  And Djimon Hounsou is always good; I just watched In America again and I will forever love anyone who had anything to do with that sweet little movie, which is one of my favorites.  Obviously Eddie Murphy is the frontrunner, though, and deservedly so.  I haven’t even seen Little Children yet but I’m pleased for Jackie Earl Hailey too because his is sort of the fallen child star comeback story, and I love those.  (He was in The Bad News Bears as a kid, and something else I can’t remember, and then kind of fell out of acting and now look!  He’s an Oscar nominee!)

But really, though.  It’s all about Gosling.  (I know he has no chance and I adore Forest Whitaker, who is practically a lock at this point, but still.  I’m enjoying the nomination.)  At the very least, this means we’ll get to see Ryan Gosling walk the red carpet and I think we can all agree that we will all be luckier for it.

Yay, Oscar nominations! I'm also very excited about Ryan Gosling. I thought he was SO GOOD and he's such a cutie pie. And I'd love to see him at the Oscars with Rachel McAdams. As for the Best Picture nominees, only one of my top three favorites (Iwo Jima) got nominated, but oh well. Also happy that Dreamgirls wasn't nominated. I thought Jennifer Hudson was great but overall I was kind of disappointed. Unfortunately I haven't been able to see Notes on a Scandal, Little Children or Last King of Scotland yet (stupid Columbia theaters), so I can't really comment on those. But, all in all the nominations have provided me with a wonderful way to avoid work today so YAY!

Jenny, what were your other two favorites?

Children of Men and Pan's Labyrinth. I also really liked The Queen and The Departed though so I'm glad they're nominated.

I'm pretty happy too, although this year wasn't a year that I felt especially passionate about, movie-wise (which I guess means there is no chance of a repeat of the RAGE I felt when Crash beat Brokeback, but am over that and moving on, really...) I am super tickled that Little Miss Sunshine got so much attention, and I'm also really pleased that Paul Greengrass got the nod for United 93, which was truly excellent. I think I enjoyed The Queen more than I enjoyed any other movie so far, but I'm with Jenny on Pan's Labyrinth -- it was nothing like I expected, and totally haunted me. Mostly I am glad that you will get your Gosling red carpet moment!!

I guess the only thing that disappointed me was not seeing Toni Colette in there anywhere.

I really liked Children of Men, too. I don't know why I keep forgetting that one.

Yay Ryan Gosling! He has been my official number 1 Hollywood boyfriend after he melted my heart in The Notebook, and I was so mad that he didn't get nominated for a Golden Globe this year. There is always an upset or two at the Oscars, right? Maybe Ryan will be this year's upset? I know...wishful thinking...but I can't wait to see him there!

And, as for the rest of the nominations, I hated Babel (which will probably win, maybe my punishment for being excited that Crash won last year), but the rest were good. Well, I haven't seen Letters (and probably won't), but I'm sure it is good. I would love a Departed win, but alas, I think it is a long shot.

I am definitely pulling for The Departed, unless Letters from Iwo Jima knocks it from my number one spot when I finally see it.

Wait, you and I agree as to who should win best pic? Amazing! :)

Jackie Earle Hailey was in Breaking Away which I adore, but only ever seem to call it "that bicycle movie".

I, too, am pulling for The Departed.

There is no one except Ryan Gosling. Except maybe Ryan Adams. :^)
