Some random thoughts about the Golden Globes, beginning with when I spotted Angelina and Brad on the red carpet.

It still makes me sad for Jennifer Aniston, but it is sort of thrilling to see Brad and Angelina together because they are just so perfect-looking.  As usual last night, Angelina looked gorgeous.  However, she kind of looked like she dressed up as J.Lo.  Also, she looked mad, like maybe she wanted to kill someone.  Hard to tell if Brad also looked mad – I don’t think that he did, but he appeared to have had fresh Botox, so, maybe.  I don’t know.

Drew Barrymore looked beautiful.  She’s one of my all-time favorites and one of my favorite red carpet moments was when she said, “Usually I wear jewelry from Urban Outfitters!”

I couldn’t decide about Cate Blanchett’s dress at first, but now I’ve decided that I liked it a lot.  Plus, she was one of the only women there who didn’t look greasy, I think her dress could have been better.

Surprisingly, I did not think that Ellen Pompeo looked disgusting.  Sometimes I think that she does.  She even handled it well when Ryan Seacrest made a skeevy comment about her nipples.

Holy cow – Reese Witherspoon might have looked the best she ever has.  Perfect.  Bangs are tricky, you know, but even her bangs were adorable.  Wow.   Renee Zellweger looked the best she has ever looked when she wore that yellow Carolina Herrera and this yellow might be Reese’s best ever as well.

When the show started, my first thought was that our close personal friend George Clooney is sort of looking like he might have aged, but that does not mean that he is not looking awesome, because he is.

Supporting Actress in a Movie – There were only two givens of the night, as best I could tell – Jennifer Hudson and America Ferrera.  I love Idol and “I Am Telling You I’m Not Going” enough that I was really excited for Jennifer Hudson, but if she wasn’t in the race, I think I probably would have been pulling for the Japanese girl  from Babel.  I loved Jennifer Hudson’s dress and her hair and her makeup, but I wish she had put on a necklace, or worn some visible earrings or a huge bracelet, or something.  Also, Beyonce (gorgeous, of course) was crying for her when she won, which, aw.

Justin Timberlake came out next.  Damn, Cameron.  Sorry ‘bout that.

Eva Longoria makes me want to throw something at my TV.

Lorraine Nicholson made a precious Miss Golden Globe.  I think it was last year when Melanie Griffith’s daughter looked like she was miserable up there – “MOM!  I don’t WANT to be stupid Miss Golden Globe!!!” – but precious Lorraine actually looked happy and sweet.

Supporting Actor on TV – I know he’s our best friend, but I’m kind of getting skeeved out by Jeremy Piven.  He uses his mom as a prop, right?  It’s sort of fake and annoying now.  Plus, did anyone else read that article where he insinuated that he was more successful than John Cusack now and that John had been less than gracious?   Even if that were true – and I do not believe it is, hello, my loyalties always lie with John Cusack – don’t talk about Jeremy, for pete’s sake.  Geez.   (And the Piv totally either wears a rug or has hair plugs, don’t you think?)

Regarding the winner in that category: Jeremy Irons looks like he is about to die tomorrow.  Or maybe he died yesterday.  He managed to be charming from beyond the grave, though.

I love Tina Fey, but whoa.  She looked bad.  Sorry, but it’s true.  She looked greasy, like she wasn’t wearing any makeup, and her dress looked like a costume.

I wish Sean Combs would disappear.

Jessica Biel’s body is INSANE.

Best Actor in a TV Drama – HUGH LAURIE!  Ha ha.  My boyfriend beat Caroline’s boyfriend (Jack Bauer).  (Caroline’s response:  “Whatever.  If it was an award for Best Total Badass, my boyfriend would kick your crippled boyfriend’s ass.  And he would do it after being tortured for almost two years in a Chinese prison.”  Fair point.)

It hurts me to say that Hilary Swank wassn’t looking as good as she sometimes does, because she is right up there with Gwyneth for me, but the flower or whatever in her hair was too girly for me.  She needs to look strong and simple.

I am so tired of Charlie Sheen.

I don’t really feel strongly about animated movies as a general rule, and I didn’t see Cars, but I sure am glad that Cars beat Happy Feet.  All I know about Cars is that my young neighbor gave it two thumbs up, but that’s good enough for me.  Have I told you about how sucky Happy Feet was?  It was like a cruel joke.  There’s a scene when the Main Character Penguin (voiced by Elijah Wood, so I kept thinking of him as a Hobbit Penguin) gets captured and goes to the zoo – his father has disowned him – and he starts HALLUCINATING his family and throwing fish at the wall in the corner of his zoo prison cell.  And this is a child’s movie?  Whatev.  It was awful.  (Good surprise from the guy who accepted the award for Cars, too, when he thanked his wife – I would have sworn the guy who says “animation is my life!”  while wearing a black suit and a purple tie was gay.)

Best Actress in a Musical or Comedy – I’ve seen all of these movies except for Miss Potter.  With the Renee Zellweger exception, it’s got to be either Toni Collette or Meryl Streep.  I mean, Beyonce being nominated for a leading role is just an effing joke, and Annette Bening in Running with Scissors – good but overhyped.  Plus, the movie wasn’t that great.   Exactly no one in the audience looked surprised when Meryl won.  I always enjoy her acceptance speeches because she seems like a smart, witty, very real person, but it does sort of ruin the suspense since you know every time she gets nominated, practically, she’s going to win.

One good thing about this year’s awards is that at least Rachel Weisz can’t win any this year.  I am still pissed that she beat out Amy Adams and Michelle Williams last year.  I’m sorry.

I didn’t even see this Gideon’s Daughter thing, but I was glad that Bill Nighy won because he was so good in Notes on a Scandal.

I love Helen Mirren.  You may remember that she was in the cinematic masterpiece Teaching Mrs. Tingle.  I also saw her in a West End play when I had like second row seats, so we are practically family.  Also, how awesome is it for her to win two awards for playing Elizabeth I and Elizabeth II on the same night?  That’s pretty cool.  I didn’t see Elizabeth I but she was truly remarkable in The Queen, still one of my favorite movies of the year.

Do you think that Brad and Ange are fighting?  What do you think they were fighting about? She was visibly pissed when they were on the red carpet, and he looked pretty pissed when it was his turn to be shown for Best Supporting Actor.

Poor Cameron.  Too much lipstick, hair too dark, dress too Bjork-like, no Justin.  A bad night for her all around, probably.

For Best Supporting Actor in a TV Comedy, I would have been happy with anyone except Tony Shalhoub, but I was pulling for Alec Baldwin.  He is so perfect in 30 Rock and deserved the win.

Okay, so no one was surprised that Ugly Betty won and that America Ferrera won.  She looked like kind of a mess by the time that she went up to accept her award, but an adorable, endearing, sweet mess.  I loved her purple dress – but I would have worn my hair all the way down if I were her.  However, no one asked me.

Warren Beatty is a total badass, but I wish that Tom Hanks would have quit saying “balls” so much.  Ew.

Let’s all hope that Martin Scorsese wins for Best Director at the Oscars, too, because it’s about time and I think The Departed is his best film since Good Fellas.  It’s my favorite film of the year.

It was really nice to see Sacha Baron Cohen not in character, right?  He’s kind of hot. I don’t like how he talked about anus and testicles and rancid air bubbles though.  That scene was the one that ruined the movie for me so I didn’t particularly want to relive it.

It’s got to be said at least one more time – Thank You for Smoking sure would have been a good movie with someone other than Katie Holmes in it.  She is only good when she plays Joey Potter.  (She played Joey Potter in both Go and the aforementioned Teaching Mrs. Tingle, which I very much enjoy and in fact own on VHS, so she did not ruin either of those.)

Was it just me or did Courteney Cox look pissed when Grey’s won?  I find Ellen Pompeo as Meredith so unappealing that I am still firmly outside of the Grey’s camp, so I thought Courteney’s expression was pretty funny.

I am sad to say that I haven’t seen The Last King of Scotland yet, but Forest Whitaker is awesome. (I guess Leo split his own votes.)  Incidentally, my favorite Forest Whitaker role?  Panic Room.  I LOVED that movie.  He was so wonderful in it and the movie was so good.  I don’t know why more people didn’t love it and it didn’t get more recognition.

Why on earth did Arnold present Best Picture?  Whatever.  And Babel?  That’s a surprise.  Not because I didn’t like it –  I actually really, really liked it, but it seems unusual that The Queen won for Best Screenplay, Marty won Best Director, and something else entirely won Best Picture.  Those were probably my three favorite films this year, though, so good for the Hollywood Foreign Press!  (The Departed and The Queen were definitely my top two.  After that there’s a lot of flexibility.)

Now, bring on the Oscar noms.

Maybe you should get over your hang up and accept that Rachel gave a better performance than Amy and Michelle.

Or, maybe you should not take what people say on their blogs quite so seriously, David.

I liked Meryl's speech too, even though I was disappointed Toni didn't win.

Drew was very pretty last night and I agree that Dr. Meredith's outfit was better than her usual yuck, yuck, yuck.

I couldn't tell if Brad and Ang were fighting, or botoxed to such a degree that their faces froze like that. Something was 'different' about his face, no? It was all soft and supple and glowing, not craggy and gaunt like usual. I can't imagine Ang needs the 'tox but maybe the African sun has given her wrinkles? Either way, she is a gazillion times hotter than (M)Aniston (sorry, I know it's mean, but I'm not a fan).

I would like to know Cate Blanchett's skincare routine, because her face was FLAWLESS. Her dress...was from an early 90's prom movie, but her face was breathtaking!

Basically, a whole bunch of stuff I don't watch or haven't seen won, but I thought Helen Mirran was gracious and elegant and regal, and I could listen to Alex Baldwin read me the menu at TGI Fridays, so WOO to both of them.

A few comments.

1. i think i have a crush on jessica biel and i think my husband is a touch worried. i kept talking about how hot she looked last night.

2. ditto re: meryl. i liked her speech. she does seem to be very down to earth and joked to al roker last night (replayed this A.M. on today) that her underpinnings were keeping her looking good in her dress.

3. i was baffled over the rachel weisz win last year. at least she looked good this year. prego or not, last year was a disaster.

4. i am a big Grey's fan, altho not b/c of meredith. i love me some dr. torres and dr. bailey. and, of course, mcdreamy. that aside, i didn't think that ellen pompeo looked fab. she looked ok. i didn't like her hair and i thought her dress was a little too aphrodite-like.

5. in my younger days, i was a brad pitt devotee (read: psychotically in love with him and his cute dimples and obsessed about him...esp. in Legends of the Falls. I'm mostly over it now. Mostly.). i did think he looked good last night, and i too noticed that he looked young-ish. ange rocked--she's just smoking--and her dress was gorgeous. TV folks were saying this A.M. that her mood was becuase (a) it was Brad's night and she was trying to be subdued so he could take center stage and (b) it was their first big outing together with all the glitz and they were just a little nervous. NERVOUS? how can you be nervous when you're on the cover of every magazine (reputable or not), like, every month????

6. My favorite looks of the evening: Reese, Penelope Cruz, Jessica Biel (hubba hubba), and Helen Mirren. Beyonce looked beautiful, but i didn't love her dress.

7. i LOVE forest whitaker. LOVE HIM, LOVE HIM, LOVE HIM!

Yay! Someone else is just as over Grey's Anatomy as I am. My expression was pissy, too, when I found out it won.

Gotta comment on the globes. I've been obsessed since they came on. I thought most of the women needed some powder, blush and lipstick. Sienna Miller looked like the jogged to the show. Gross! My favorite: Drew Barrymore.LOVED her! She is so sweet and just seems like someone I could be BFF with. Overall, I wasn't that excited at all! I hope the Oscars are better.

The Globes were just blah to me. I like Ugly Betty pretty well, but blah. Grey's is good, but who cares. I hated Babel, so blah. Haven't seen Dreamgirls, so who cares. Women with no makeup and greasy skin, blah.

My favorite thing about the entire night was Ryan Seacrest on E!. I love him for some reason.

There isn't nearly as much that I am excited about this year, either. No movie has grabbed me this year like, say, Million Dollar Baby or Brokeback did the past couple of years.

What would really excite me would be if Ryan Gosling got a nomination for Half Nelson, but I'm not holding my breath.

I am humiliated to say that work plus baby meant I didn't even know the Globes were on, much less DVR and/or watch them. so embarrassing. Emilie, I love Joey Potter and hate TomKat, but did you ever see Abandon with Katie and Benjamin Bratt? I love that movie and it is very anti-Joey and I thought she was good.
