ECHO

Dowtown, artsy, New York-based, women-friendly computer bulletin board service (BBS) with a relatively high proportion of female subscribers (some 40 percent in early 1997).

Proprietor and sysop (system operator) Stacy Horn (b. 1956) founded ECHO in March 1990 to cultivate a kind of cyber-salon: the name officially stands for East Coast Hang-Out.

Aiming for “a virtual Algonquin Round Table,” the BBS cultivated early online allegiances from a mix of New York artists and culture critics that lends cachet to email addresses bearing the “echonyc” domain name.
